If you can take a camera to work and everywhere (and it does not bother me manual focus) FM2n Nikon ($ 250 - $ 400) or FM3A ($ 350 - $ 450). No batteries required, so it works in almost any temperature. The FM3A has some characteristics of, as long as the batteries are good.

If you want AF, Nikon N90S ($ 250 - $ 400) or F100 ($ 450 - $ 600). The F100 is a professional camera and the D300 is based on it. That means you can both (F100 and D300/D700 Full Frame Switch) and easily between them.

Even if you buy later a D700, you get exactly the same view / output of your digital photos from film. When you buy a flash remember that the film flashes (SB26, SB28), no TT-R with digital cameras, but are SB600/800/900 with the digital film and synchronized.

I know the Nikon N70 is cheaper than that and nothing I had to do. Add 400 if done to 600, I'm sure you can get the N90S or higher.
